Horses as Medicine

As a rather enigmatic & captivating member of the natural world, it’s no wonder that Cavemen chose to paint them on their walls... Noblemen stood for hours to be immortalised with their steeds in paintings, tapestries & statues because of the strength & prestige the horse imbued upon them.  And now the horse is known as being more than just strong & beautiful. We have discovered in the horse an entire world of relationship & connection....

Strengthen Your Intuition With Yoga

I think there are a lot of connotations tied to yoga that people don’t want to connect themselves with. Maybe it’s the connection with hippies (I do love a good hippie though!)Or just the idea of sitting still (squirmy is the word that comes to mind)I don’t really know why but yoga turns some people off. All I know is that yoga has been integral for developing my intuition, something that has transformed my life (read about how here)...

How Intuition Transformed My Life

I’ve been kicking my feet around about how to write this piece for longer than I probably should have.  I would think about picking up my pen, I would stare at the screen of my computer, I would even write down in my to do lists to put pen to paper on it but it just wouldn't happen. The problem is that the subject is a bit of a mystery to me and writing about something that’s a mystery is hard.I don't know exactly what intuition is.All I know is that it’s played it’s hand rather hea...

'MURIWAI' - The Making, The Moment & The Meaning

I met Huia the way a lot of people meet these days, on Instagram Huia brought such a bright & positive energy to the project & her horses were fully on board for us to travel alongside them in the truck while they cantered along the beach they knew well.  Initially we had cancelled the shoot because the weather was looking dubious but my friend, Sharni needed to go to Auckland anyway so we figured we would just all go & see what happens.. The weather was stop start stop start rain the whole...

Casey Brodie

How much of a session do I make posed or unposed?  Answer - depends on the subjects.  This session was a quick blast of energy. 3 kids, 2 horses, 2 dogs, 1 cat. All of which have large personalities & vitality which is absolutely fantastic but can make for blurry photos if I ask them to stay still for too long! The truth is this family has a lot of energy & instead of trying to make for a 'perfect' portrait by forcing a square shape into a round hole why not just go with it! Casey love...

Sam, Pippi & Aianna

Sam & her grandmother share these two lovely horses, Pippi & Aiyanna. I was really touched by the idea of family member sharing a love of horses so much that they share their horses. Spending time together with them creating key memories. I remember being so in love with horses it drove me crazy not having my own! I've always wondered how my life would have turned out if my parents had got me a pony when I was young... there's no way of knowing, but I like to think that everything works out...

Charlotte O'Grady

Photographing dressage horses with all their lovely pizzazz & presence was a contrast for me after taking photos for a lot of western horses at the AQHANZ Nationals Photographing different disciplines is a learning curve. Western riders like their loping shots at a different stage of the gait than english riders. The top lines & head carriages are different between the disciplines so adaptation in my approach to each is required. It just isn't going to work if I try to make an English ...

Why I Photograph Horses?

Universally & across the span of centuries horses have been admired, written into mythology & painted into royal portraits… heck they’ve been painted on prehistoric cave walls! I’ve loved horses since I was too young to make reasoned decisions. It’s something that is hard to put into words. Perhaps that is why I am compelled to take photos of them - in doing so I am figuring out what draws me to them. And I guess I haven’t really thought about my love for horses… I’ve felt...

What is Fine Art Equine Photography?

Fine art photography was first introduced to me when I started photography years ago & found the work of Erich McVey & Jose Villa mesmerising.  It was something in the simplicity, minimalism & aesthetic of film that drew me in but I still couldn’t really give a good definition. Now, years later through active engagement with the medium of photography I can say how I define fine art.  Fine art to me is finding a meaning or value to convey through a photo. Sometimes it’s setting up an...

AQHA-NZ Nationals Favourites

Photographing AQHANZ Nationals at NEC Taupo was a totally immersive experience for me. Western riding & quarter horses have been a passion of mine for a long time but being surrounded with this calibre of talent & breeding was next level. The horsemanship & comradeship of the individuals who make AQHANZ what it is today was deeply inspiring - a true community coming together to celebrate one thing - the strength, beauty & versatility of the Quarter Horse.  Over the course of the s...

Wild Thyme Horsemanship

Ellie Harrison of Wild Thyme Horsemanship is one of those women who quietly achieves astounding things like it's no big deal...Like horses just lay down & rear on command all of the time! She has such an easy way about her, it's no wonder her horses are so happy to do her bidding. Her Kaimanawa stallion - oh yeah who was WILD only 9 months ago! - is named after Military Auxillary Radio System but it also happens to be the Roman god of war, Ares the Greek equivalent. He may have be...

AQHA Youth

My favourite photos from the AQHA Youth camp at the Taupo Western Riding grounds. I am a huge fan of the quarter horse breed & I love seeing young people getting involved in showing & training with their own AQHA's. Quarter horses are such a versatile breed, with so much heart & ability, a sound mind & not to mention they are gorgeous! Photographing for the AQHA association shows & events is close to my heart, my own mare is a quarter horse & I love spending time with the people at these events ...

Best Locations for Equestrian Brand Photos

In the online space, photos are the store front of your equine brand.  The gorgeous horses and products are the first thing a customer sees when they arrive at your website or social media page. Photography makes a big impact so it is important that the photos are done right so that they convey a clear, cohesive message to your clients that places you as a quality, professional brand.  So how do we manipulate the environmental variables (ahhh my bachelor of science has been useful for ...

Why you should include headshots

Engagement is that marvellous thing we are all chasing online and showing your face is proven to increase your engagement In a study of 1.1mil photos on Instagram, photos of faces got 38% more likely to get a double tap and 32% more likely to get comments than photos without faces. Headshots bring a human element to a brand which increases trust, reliability & relatability. Not only are they fantastic for increasing engagement, I am a big believer in having professional headshots ...

My Approach To Equine Product Photography

Research, Plan, Set-up & Capture.  Notice something about that philosophy? It is heavily focussed on what goes on before I even pick up the camera. I like to know everything I can about a brand before I shoot it so that I can capture the brands values and point of difference. There are different photographic techniques that I employ to convey different emotions and appeal to different audiences. Sound silly? Let me break it down. ...

My Canadian Sisters

Each with their own personality & eccentricities but all of them LOVE horses and horses are a huge part of their lives.
